This ordinance has not gone without opposition, however. The SFPOC (San Francisco Proponents of Chard) were furious with the selection of kale over chard. When asked about the selection of kale the SFPOC had this to say, “Kale is too fibrous and not visually pleasing. We want to eat pretty leaves.” This argument was acknowledged by Lee’s office in an official statement: “We do think that chard is pretty,” but would not comment any further on the issue.
Look for City mandated kale to be on your plates by Wednesday April 2nd, or face a fine of 10 hours of community gardening at your local garden.
