Building Internal Support for Your Sustainability Program - Oct. 15th, 2008
Event Summary
On Wednesday October 15, 2008 the BC3 hosted an event titled “Building Internal Support for your Sustainability Program.” The event took place in the offices of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and was presented by Kathleen Gilligan and Karen Janowski of EcoStrategy Group and Allison Quaid of Creative Eco-Catalysts. Gilligan and Janowski discussed ways to “sell” sustainability plans to upper level executives. They emphasized the importance of understanding the audience to which you are speaking. For example, executives often focus on quantifiable results, so presentations on sustainability should have an aspect of quantifiable deliverables. On the flip side of the issue, Quaid talked about how to engage employees in sustainability programs. Quaid discussed strategies for getting employees to change behavior, including different ways to convey information more compellingly. All in all, the three presenters painted a comprehensive picture on building successful sustainability programs by urging members to think about the points of view of those who you are trying to get buy-in from.
