Using Gaming Techniques for Sustainable Behavior Change
On August 25, BC3 members gathered for a brown bag event at BC3 sponsor Blue Shield of California's San Francisco offices. The event centered around gamification - using gaming techniques to drive engagement - as an emerging trend in promoting sustainable behavior.
At the event, Bryce Williams, Director of Wellvolution at Blue Shield of California, Leilani Latimer, Director of Sustainability at Sabre Holdings (Travelocity's parent company), Belis Aksoy, Social Media Marketing Manager at SunPower, and Paul McGrath, CEO of RideSpring, spoke about how they are using gaming techniques to encourage sustainable behavior change, including:
How Blue Shield is using a competition to encourage healthy employee behavior;
The secret to Sabre Holdings' successful implementation of internal sustainability programs;
Why SunPower is using a Facebook contest to effectively reach their consumers;
How Fenwick & West has transformed the commute into a fun and rewarding competition.
After speaker presentations, attendees engaged in discussion, moderated by Nancy Shaw of Blue Shield, about how to best kick-off competitions to maximize participation, when to use "team policing" to guarantee fairness and accuracy in the competitions, whether companies have seen demographic trends in the data collected, and much more.
